Today, during the holy words after the candle lighting, the Satmar Rebbe shlit"a spoke powerful words of inspiration, in a voice choked with tears, about "the great heavenly mercy we need so that the generations should not fall away." The Rebbe said that on the first day one lights so that he himself should be righteous, on the second day for the children, on the third for the grandchildren, and so on.
"May my offspring and the offspring of my offspring be Torah scholars and chassidim."
