In the Torah, the Rebbe shlit"a focused on the verse in the Parah reading, "Zos chukas haTorah," and explained that the fact that Yidden stumbled in the sin of the Golden Calf magnified the importance of receiving the Torah. Even when one is at such a low level, with the impurity of Egypt gathered within them, they nevertheless reached such a level of "naaseh v'nishma," and not by virtue of the merit of the forefathers. This teaches that sometimes a Yid faces difficult tests and does not overcome the yetzer hara; while performing mitzvos, the yetzer hara comes and reminds him and dampens his appetite. On the contrary, now his mitzvos are far more precious, because it shows that he has no merit of the forefathers, since "the deeds of the fathers are a sign for the children," but rather everything is his own avodah.
