On Erev Shabbos afternoon, after the first five o'clock hour, the Rebbe shlit"a lit the menorah in his holy home and recited "HaNeiros" through "Maoz Tzur" as is customary.
On Friday night at around 5:00, the Rebbe shlit"a entered the beis medrash wrapped in his tallis and approached the amud for Mincha.
After Mincha, the appeal for the Beis Horaah of our holy kehilla in Williamsburg took place, with HaGaon Rabbi, the Av Beis Din of Sighet shlit"a, speaking.
Kabbalas Shabbos: R' Chaim Heller. The davening concluded at around 6:40.
After davening, the crowd went over to wish "Gut Shabbos" and greet the Rebbe, and the Rebbe shlit"a returned to his holy home.
At around 8:55, the Rebbe shlit"a entered the Shabbos seudah in the hall of the great beis medrash, where the young talmidim of our holy yeshiva in Williamsburg had the privilege of eating with him.
The Rebbe shlit"a began in his holy manner with "Shalom Aleichem," "Be'Esh Lehavah," and "Eishes Chayil." The cup for Kiddush was held by the Av Beis Din and Rosh Yeshiva of Williamsburg shlit"a.
The Rebbe shlit"a honored people with leading the zemiros. "Kol Mekadesh": HaRav R' Hershel Horowitz shlit"a, director of the yeshiva for the young; "Menucha V'Simcha": HaRav R' Yoel Schwartz shlit"a, dayan of our beis medrash in the Gelbstein building in the Catskill neighborhood.
The Rebbe shlit"a said Torah on the Gemara in Maseches Shabbos, on the sugya of "kavsah," to resolve the words of the Eitz Chaim zy"a, that Shabbos and milah are in truth only a positive commandment for which one is not obligated to give up his life, because in a time of decree, a melacha on Shabbos is a "melacha she'einah tzerichah l'gufah." But since the Chashmonaim were like a prominent chassid, who may give up their lives, and they did so "so that not everyone should merit a reward through a miracle," and in commemoration of this it is forbidden to make use of its light. He also related what he heard from his father z"l regarding the approach of the Maharik, on which they relied in the wars, concerning performing a melacha on Shabbos due to duress.
