"A Day of Teruah Shall It Be for You"

On the first day of Yom Tov in the morning, the Satmar Rebbe shlit"a entered the beis medrash at around 8:15. The Rebbe shlit"a conducted his holy tefillos with awesome weeping. The sound of weeping was heard throughout the entire beis medrash during the tefillos, especially at "Shir HaMaalos Mima'amakim" and at the piyut "Yarasi B'fatzosi." It stirred the hearts of the thousands of mispallelim.

Pesukei D'zimra: HaGaon Rabbi Avrohom Shalom Friedman shlit"a, one of the roshei hakollelim. Shacharis: HaGaon HaTzaddik, the Dayan U'Moreh Tzedek shlit"a.

After a short break, the Rebbe shlit"a entered wearing the kittel and silver kappel. The honors of hotzaa and hachnasa (taking out and returning the Torah) were given to HaGaon Rabbi Yosef Hersh Sofer shlit"a and HaGaon Rabbi Ari Asher Indig shlit"a, of the dayanim of our holy kehilla. The pesukei Shema Yisroel: HaRav HaTzaddik Rabbi Yitzchak Tzvi Weiss shlit"a, Av Beis Din of Uhel of Boro Park.

The Rebbe shlit"a was the baal koreh, and read with weeping and great hisorerus.

Aliyos. Kohen: the Av Beis Din of Uhel in Boro Park shlit"a; Levi: R' Elazar Gruber; Shlishi: HaGaon HaTzaddik, the Dayan U'Moreh Tzedek shlit"a; Revii: R' Yehuda Weiss; Chamishi: the Rebbe shlit"a.

After his aliya, the Rebbe shlit"a recited the Mi Sheberach and the naming for the birth of a daughter for the following baalei simcha:
R' Moshe Dovid Neiman.
R' Shimon Schwartz.
R' Chaim Yekusiel Katz.
R' Avrohom Shimon Wieder.

Hagbah of the first Sefer: R' Chaim Aharon Klein; Gelilah: R' Simcha Katz; Maftir: R' Meir Hirsch; Hagbah of the second Sefer: R' Eliezer Lev of London; Gelilah: R' Shimon Schwartz. The davening concluded at 12:20.

There was a pause. The Rebbe shlit"a went to the mikvah and then went home.

At around 1:30 the Rebbe shlit"a entered the beis medrash wrapped in the tallis, kappel and kittel of the Divrei Yoel zt"l, and under the kittel a white kaftan. The Rebbe shlit"a went up to the aron kodesh, said a silent tefilla, and began the festive Tekias Shofar drasha on the verse "Ashrei HaAm Yodei Seruah," that there are two ways in which the Creator awakens us to teshuva: one is by sending a harsh king like Haman, and the second way is by sending a spirit of purity into Jewish children, so that when one is engaged in Torah, one merits to be awakened through a call of affection. The Rebbe shlit"a continued with awesome weeping: "A year has passed, as was mentioned yesterday, that 'Vayehi' is an expression of sorrow; it has been a difficult year. We beg the holy Creator, 'Hashiveinu Hashem eilecha v'nashuva' — awaken us to teshuva by sending a spirit of purity, not through a harsh king like Haman." The Rebbe shlit"a quoted from the Divrei Yoel zt"l that there are times when a harsh king like Haman does not help, but only makes things worse, as in Egypt: 'And they did not listen to Moshe, because of shortness of spirit and hard labor.' We had a very difficult year; Hashem awakened Klal Yisroel in a difficult manner. "Holy Creator, send a spirit of purity, awaken Klal Yisroel with the attribute of mercy. In today's generations, if one is awakened through suffering, on the contrary, it can harm," when the shofar is blown, with its geneichos and yelalos, Jews know how to entice their Creator with the teruah, and from this alone one is already awakened to teshuva.

The Rebbe shlit"a continued that it says in the Eliya Rabba that on Rosh Hashana the weeping of Sarah Imeinu at the time of the Akeidah is awakened. The meaning of this weeping is that at the Akeidah, Sarah Imeinu saw the troubles of Klal Yisroel until this very day, and her holy heart could not bear it, and her soul departed. The Rebbe shlit"a cried out with great weeping, "And every year, at the time of Tekias Shofar, Sarah Imeinu, the mother of Klal Yisroel, weeps together with all the Jewish mothers who each weep over their own troubles." He enumerated troubles for which Jewish children need help, and said that the merit of Sarah Imeinu protects Klal Yisroel, and he bestowed brachos.

After the drasha, the Rebbe shlit"a said Kaddish D'Rabbanan. The davening concluded at around 2:00.

After the drasha, the bris took place of the bochur Baruch Ari Feigel, where the Rebbe was sandek and mohel.

Afterwards, the Rebbe shlit"a went up to the bimah; the Sifrei Torah were held by R' Meir Hersh Greenbaum and R' Aharon Spitzer.

At 2:15 the Rebbe shlit"a began "Min HaMeitzar." The Rebbe shlit"a recited the brachos with holy fire and blew the Tekios D'meyushav. The baal mikra was HaGaon HaTzaddik, the Dayan U'Moreh Tzedek shlit"a.
