Come, Let Us Return to Hashem

Fiery holy words, spoken in tears, from the Satmar Rebbe shlit"a at the assembly of spiritual awakening in our great beis medrash in Kiryas Joel on Rosh Chodesh Sivan, the 45th day of the Omer, regarding "for the sake of the 45 was the wrath unleashed," following the Lag B'Omer tragedy at the holy site of Meron.

To Know For What Reason This Happened, and for What Reason That Happened

The Rebbe began with the verse, "In the third month after the Children of Israel left the land of Egypt, on this day they came to the Sinai desert." That day was Rosh Chodesh Sivan, and the Jews did teshuva once again because they had arrived at a holy place. The Rebbe spoke about how Rosh Chodesh Sivan is a "time suited for teshuva." But this year, unfortunately, we have gathered not for a good reason, "...because of the bad news from our holy land, which unfortunately took place at the holy site of Meron this past Lag B'Omer. It was a very difficult event, from the crowding and the crush, and, Rachmana litzlan, 45 precious souls were killed. And what we say on our Shabbos of pain has been fulfilled: 'the joy of our hearts has ceased, our dance has turned to mourning.' ...The entire House of Israel is mourning and grieving, as it says in the verse, 'and He increased in the daughter of Yehuda mourning and lamentation.' ...And what we have lost in these precious souls who were lost in a holy place and on a holy day..." Afterwards the Rebbe spoke about how everyone is obligated to examine his deeds and do a complete teshuva. He spoke about how "the ways of Hashem are hidden and His thoughts are very deep," that we do not understand Hashem's ways, and we are believers, the children of believers, that there is no such thing as coincidence, everything is by the Divine Providence of the Holy Creator, and "whatever the Merciful One does, He does for the good." "But everyone must make a personal accounting at such a time."
