Leil Hoshana Rabbah, Ushpizin of Dovid HaMelech Moshiach — 'B'tzeil HaKodesh' with the Satmar Rebbe shlit"a

Between Mincha and Maariv, hundreds of guests from overseas, members of the kehilla, who had come to travel to bask in the shadow of holiness, entered for an extended time to greet the Rebbe and receive a blessing.

Before Maariv, the Rebbe lit the healthy candles from Yom Kippur in his private room.
The Rebbe davened Maariv at around 8:20, dressed in the white kaftan, in his holy home, and after Maariv all those present went in to greet him and receive a blessing.

At around 10:00 the Rebbe shlit"a entered the great beis medrash for the reading of Mishneh Torah, dressed in a white kaftan and a white gartel, and recited the prayer before the reading.
- Baal koreh: R' Shalom Yosef Samet shlit"a.
They finished at around 11:40.

A few minutes later the Rebbe entered the pure tish in honor of Hoshana Rabbah and the Ushpizin of Dovid HaMelech Moshiach in the great sukkah adjacent to the great beis medrash.

The Rebbe recited the order of the Ushpizin and washed his hands.
At the lechayim the Rebbe wished "a good, blessed year." During the tish, melodies of awakening and melodies of the Yamim Noraim were sung.
The hosts of the Ushpizin set out wine, and after the meat course the hosts of the Ushpizin gave out kugels, and the Rebbe distributed shirayim.

With the Shir HaMaalos the Rebbe honored:
- HaGaon Rabbi Dovid Greenfeld shlit"a, moreh tzedek.
- HaGaon Rabbi Dovid Perl shlit"a.
- R' Shmuel Dovid Markowitz (of Williamsburg).

The Rebbe shlit"a delivered a Torah thought on the verse "I hoped for Hashem, my soul hoped," and brought out a straightforward explanation of what the holy Zohar discusses: that on Rosh Hashana we daven for personal needs and not for the needs of Above. It is ruled that one may not bring vows and voluntary offerings on Yom Tov, since a portion goes to the altar, so it is called a korban and not "for you." When a Jew davens for money, health, and so on, it is not only for ordinary needs: one needs money to buy matzos and the Four Species, etc., and one needs to be healthy in order to be able to come to the beis medrash, etc. Even though it is a personal need, it contains a part of the needs of Above, and one may daven for it. He elaborated with a weeping voice that the needs of Your people Israel are many, and Jews beseech Hashem for all kinds of salvations, yet "Hoshana for Your sake, our G-d" is for the needs of Above. He concluded with abundant blessings.

- Birkas Hamazon: the Rav of Beis Medrash Ohel Piga, the Av Beis Din, shlit"a.
They finished at around 1:20.

After the tish the Rebbe entered the beis medrash, before a large crowd, for the recital of Tehillim. Baal tefillah: R' Asher Yaakov Eckstein. After each sefer the Yehi Ratzon for Hoshana Rabbah and Kaddish were said. They finished at around 3:15 and the Rebbe went home to his holy residence.

Yom Hoshana Rabbah

In the morning at around 11:15 the Rebbe shlit"a entered the beis medrash wrapped in the tallis, kappel and kittel of the Divrei Yoel zt"l, and beneath it the white bekitshe with stripes.

Before davening a bris of a newborn son took place for R' Yosef Asher Felberbaum, at which the Rebbe served as sandek.

The Rebbe shlit"a proceeded to Birchos HaShachar, Pesukei D'Zimra and Shacharis, omitting [additions] in the nusach of the Yamim Noraim, and Hallel was recited in full as is customary, with the song recited verse by verse.
During Hallel the Rebbe omitted all the chapters from the beginning, as on Yom Tov, and prolonged his holy service at the shaking of the lulav with holy emotion, with great devotion and arousal, as the entire congregation of thousands upon thousands of Jews sang the holy melodies with tears streaming. After Hallel the rings were removed from the lulav as is customary.

At 1:55 the Rebbe shlit"a began the fiery "Derasha of Hoshana Rabbah" with the well-known parable often repeated by the holy Rebbes zy"a: Hoshana Rabbah is the last day the king is in the city, but "for Your sake, our G-d" — when one is concerned with the king's benefit, one does not ask questions. He prolonged with stormy weeping and tears, which drew the entire beis medrash into awesome weeping.

Afterwards the Rebbe continued at length with lofty concepts and words of arousal, weeping, in honor of the day:
- Hoshana for Your sake, our G-d: We shake the Four Species in the four directions of the world to show that Hashem is the One Who leads and brings; Hashem changes the times and alters the seasons, so that even in older years teshuva out of fear is counted as teshuva out of love. So too now, on Hoshana Rabbah, the last day the king is in the city, Hashem brings here the days of the month of Elul and the Ten Days of Repentance, and it turns out that it is not the last day and the teshuva is indeed in its proper time.

- For Your sake, our Creator: When Hashem looks upon Klal Yisroel, it brings a blessing. At the time of the creation of the world, Hashem looked at all the generations until this very day, and that gaze enables us today to be awakened to teshuva. Therefore we daven "Hoshana for Your sake, our Creator," that Hashem should look at us again so that we can be awakened to teshuva and merit "Look down from Your holy abode and bless Your people Israel."
- Hoshana for Your sake, our Redeemer: At the redemption from Egypt, Hashem acquired Klal Yisroel with kinyan meshicha through "calling it and it comes," and this is why we daven "Hoshana for Your sake, our Redeemer," that Hashem should today as well call to us and we will come, and not, Heaven forbid, strike with a stick.
- Hoshana for Your sake, our Seekers: Chazal taught that acting beyond the letter of the law obligates Hashem with the mitzvah of loading and unloading, and when Hashem sees a Jew striving to be upright, Hashem must help him.
- Hoshana for the sake of Your truth: Through the power of the holy Torah, which is truth, the tzaddikim have the power to rearrange words and turn tzarah into tzohar, machalah into lechem, pesha into shefa, etc., and to bring down all good.
- Hoshana for the sake of Your covenant: A knife ordinarily cuts something in two, but the knife of a bris milah is the opposite and attaches Klal Yisroel to Hashem and brings down all kinds of blessings. This is why we daven "Hoshana for the sake of Your covenant," that through the mitzvah of bris milah Hashem should bestow upon us all kinds of salvations.
- Hoshana for the sake of Your greatness and splendor: Through the Four Species, which bring down the flow of "leading and bringing," Hashem brings the places where one sinned to the person, so that one need not return to all those bad places when one wishes to do teshuva. He concluded with abundant blessings, that Hashem should be the One Who leads and brings and should bring down all the salvations and blessings we need, "whatever he lacks."

The derasha ended at approximately 2:55, and the hakafos around the beis medrash began. The Rebbe shlit"a recited the Hoshanos with great arousal. Between the hakafos the Av Beis Din of Williamsburg shlit"a blew the shofar as is customary. After the circuits the piyutim were recited, and after Kaddish Titkabal the Rebbe beat the Hoshanos five times and said the Yehi Ratzon as is customary.

Ata Hareisa, the Thirteen Attributes, Ribono Shel Olam and the Shir HaMaalos of the Ten Days of Repentance were recited as is customary.
- Hotzaah and Hachnasah: HaGaon Rabbi Aharon Menachem Oestreicher shlit"a, moreh tzedek in our holy kehilla in London.
- Pesukei Shema Yisroel: R' Tzvi Akiva Breitstein (Beit Shemesh).
- Baal koreh: R' Yaakov Eisenbach (London).
- Kohen: R' Yoel Meisels shlit"a (Vienna).
- Levi: R' Yudel Wosner shlit"a (Manchester) — who bentched Gomel and was motzi hundreds of the new guests, members of the kehilla.
- Shlishi: R' Eliezer Eichenstein shlit"a (Yerushalayim).
- Revii: the Rebbe shlit"a.
- Hagbah: R' Yaakov Hersh Teitelbaum (Lakewood).
Gelilah: R' Yoshe Klein shlit"a (Yerushalayim).

- Mussaf: HaGaon R' Chaim Halberstam shlit"a.
The kohanim duchened.
- Mincha: baal tefillah: HaGaon Rabbi Asher Chaim Weiser shlit"a, moreh tzedek in our holy kehilla in Boro Park.
They finished at around 4:50.

The Rebbe washed for the seudah in the sukkah of his holy residence. For bentching the Rebbe honored his grandson Rabbi Dovid Teitelbaum shlit"a (Boro Park), son of the Rav of the Beis Medrash, HaGaon Yisroel Shalom shlit"a.

In his holy residence the Rebbe went to the mikvah to purify himself in honor of Yom Tov.
