Leil Hoshana Rabba, Ushpizin of Dovid HaMelech Moshiach 'B'tzeil HaKodesh' with the Satmar Rebbe shlit"a

Because of the rain, the Rebbe held the Yom Tov seudah in the private sukkah in his holy home. After saying the Seder HaUshpizin, the Rebbe shlit"a washed for the Yom Tov seudah. At bentching, the Rebbe honored R' Dovid Farkash.

At around 10:10 the Rebbe shlit"a entered the Beis Medrash HaGadol for the reading of Mishneh Torah, and recited the prayer before the reading. Baal koreh: Rabbi Shalom Yosef Samet shlit"a. They finished at around 11:50.

After Mishneh Torah, the Rebbe went up to the bimah of honor in front of the Aron Kodesh in the heichal of the Beis Medrash HaGadol, and they sang at length the melodies of the Yamim Noraim with great inspiration.

For the Shir HaMaalos, the Rebbe shlit"a honored:
- R' Dovid Shlomo Berger.
- R' Shmuel Dovid Markowitz (of the Williamsburg Beis Din).
- R' Dovid Eckstein.

The Rebbe shlit"a said Torah on the verse "Blow the shofar at the new moon," explaining that through the Torah a person receives free choice, since "I created the Torah as a spice against it," which should awaken him to teshuva for his deeds. Moreover, the reason the Jewish people accepted the Torah and not the angels is that a person has free choice, and reflection must bring about a change for the good in a person. The custom with us to blow the shofar on Hoshana Rabba is "improve your deeds," and on this day the curse is turned into a blessing; one can pray for one's needs just as on Rosh Hashana.
They finished at around 12:45, and the Rebbe went into his private room.

After a few minutes the Rebbe shlit"a entered the Beis Medrash with the great assembly for the recitation of Tehillim. Baal tefilla: R' Asher Yaakov Eckstein. After each book they said the Yehi Ratzon for Hoshana Rabba and Kaddish. They finished at about 2:45 and the Rebbe shlit"a went home to his holy residence, where the Rebbe bound the hoshanos for himself and for the Rebbetzin tichye.

Yom Hoshana Rabba

On the morning of the day, at around 11:20, the Rebbe shlit"a entered the Beis Medrash wrapped in the tallis, kappel and kittel of the Divrei Yoel zt"l, with the white bekitshe beneath it.

Before davening, a bris was held for the newborn son of R' Yosef Chaviv Masri, at which the Rebbe served as sandek.

The Rebbe shlit"a proceeded to the brachos, Pesukei D'Zimra and Shacharis, omitting [piyutim] in the nusach of the Yamim Noraim, and Hallel HaGadol as customary, with the song said verse by verse.
During Hallel the Rebbe shlit"a prolonged his holy service at the naanuim with holy emotion, with deveikus and great inspiration, while the entire assembly of thousands upon thousands of Jews sang the holy melodies with tears flowing.
After Hallel, the rings were removed from the lulav as customary.

At 1:50 the Rebbe shlit"a began the fiery "Hoshana Rabba derasha," with the well-known parable often repeated by our holy Rebbes zy"a, "One who walks in the ways of his forefathers, the merit of the forefathers is mentioned for him," and spoke at length with stormy weeping and tears, which swept the entire Beis Medrash into awesome weeping.

Afterward the Rebbe continued at length with lofty concepts and words of inspiration, weeping, in honor of the day:
- "Hoshana for Your sake, our G-d": the initials spell "ohel," which alludes to a mikvah, showing that Hashem's attributes have no limit, and all questions are answered. On this holy day Jews accept upon themselves to improve in speech, deed and thought, Torah and prayer, and a salvation comes for oneself and one's household.
- "For Your sake, our Creator": There is a judgment and an accounting: judgment for sinful acts, and accounting for the time one could have done a mitzvah. Therefore the shofar is blown twice, to rectify both.
- "Hoshana for Your sake, our Redeemer": We were redeemed from Egypt because "I am with him in distress"; therefore the other exiles need not be completed, and we can indeed merit the complete redemption.
- "For Your sake, our Seeker": Chazal teach that Hashem will not exchange the Jewish people for another nation; therefore Hashem is obligated to bestow abundance of livelihood, healing and redemption.

- "Hoshana for the sake of Your truth": By engaging in Torah, the Torah of truth, the forces of evil are burned and one can pray properly; hence the call goes out to everyone to set a fixed time for study before davening.
- "Hoshana for the sake of Your covenant": Through bris milah Jews have the status of holiness, and it removes the blemish in the upper worlds.
- "Hoshana for the sake of Your greatness and glory": These are the four species of the lulav; since we hold the two species in the right hand, which is more important, this is proof that we follow the majority, and through teshuva done in public, intentional sins are also turned into merits. A holy congregation stands before many, and Hoshana Rabba will surely be sealed for good and blessing. He concluded with many blessings.

The derasha ended at around 3:45, and they began to circle the Beis Medrash. The Rebbe shlit"a recited the hoshanos beforehand with great inspiration. Between the hakafos, the Av Beis Din of Williamsburg shlit"a blew the shofar as customary. After the circling they said the piyutim, and after Kaddish Titkabal the Rebbe beat the hoshanos 5 times and said the Yehi Ratzon as customary.

They said Atah Hareisa, the Thirteen Attributes, Ribbono Shel Olam and the Shir HaMaalos of Aseres Yemei Teshuva as customary.
- Hotzaah and Hachnasah: R' Shalom Eliezer Rotter (Bnei Brak).
- Pesukei Shema Yisroel: the Rebbe's grandson, Rabbi Menachem Shlomo Ashkenazi shlit"a (Boro Park), son of the Rebbe's son-in-law HaGaon HaTzaddik, rav of Beis Medrash Avnei Tzedek shlit"a.
- Baal koreh: R' Yaakov Schreiber (Antwerp).
Aliyos:
- Kohen: the Rebbe's grandson, HaGaon R' Yoel Glantz shlit"a, moreh tzedek in our holy kehilla of Williamsburg.
- Levi: Rabbi Yudel Wosner shlit"a (Manchester), who recited Birchas HaGomel and fulfilled the obligation for the hundreds of guests from overseas.
- Shlishi: R' Tzvi Akiva Breitstein (Beit Shemesh).
- Revii: the Rebbe shlit"a.
- Hagbah: HaGaon R' Yoel Daskal shlit"a (Bnei Brak).
- Gelilah: R' Aharon Meir Weiss (Bnei Brak).

Musaf: HaGaon R' Chaim Halberstam shlit"a. The kohanim duchened, and immediately after Musaf Mincha was davened. Baal tefilla: HaGaon R' Yoel, son of Binyamin Zev Weiss shlit"a (Bnei Brak). They finished at around 4:30.

A few minutes after Mincha, the Rebbe shlit"a entered the tish in honor of the day in the large sukkah and said the Seder HaUshpizin. At the lechayim after the fish, the Rebbe wished "a good blessed year." With the soup, kreplach were served as customary, and Yom Tov melodies were sung.

For the zemiros the Rebbe honored: Rabbi Yitzchak Dovid Jacob shlit"a (Yerushalayim). Birchas Hamazon: HaGaon R' Menachem Zev Stern shlit"a, moreh tzedek in our kehilla of Williamsburg. They finished at 5:15.

At his holy home the Rebbe went to the mikvah to purify himself for the Yom Tov, and later lit the yizkor candles.
