Yom Hakadosh 5785 — "B'tzeil HaKodesh" with the Satmar Rebbe shlit"a among our holy kehilla in Williamsburg

On Friday, Erev Yom Kippur, at about 6:00 in the morning, the Rebbe shlit"a entered the Great Beis Medrash in Kiryas Joel for the recital of Selichos. The baal tefillah was R' Yehoshua Teller. They finished at about 6:20. After Selichos, a large crowd of the chassidim and residents of Kiryas Joel passed by to give and receive blessings on Erev Yom Kippur, and the Rebbe went home to his holy residence.

In his holy residence, the Rebbe shlit"a fulfilled the minhag of Kaparos and burned the ends of the feathers.
Afterward, at about 6:40, the Rebbe shlit"a went over to the mehudar slaughterhouse, where R' Yoel son of R' Moshe Wertzberger shlit"a slaughtered the chicken. The Rebbe examined the knife, and after the shechita recited the Leshem Yichud and the blessing, and fulfilled the mitzvah of covering the blood. The Rebbe also examined the knives of all the shochtim and wished them a gmar chasima tova. He then toured the poultry-processing area of the slaughterhouse and went through every detail in his holy manner.

At about 7:30 the Rebbe shlit"a traveled to Williamsburg to spend Yom Hakadosh there.

At about 8:55 the Rebbe shlit"a arrived at the Great Beis Medrash in Williamsburg.
The Rebbe shlit"a called in — before the time in Eretz Yisroel and in Europe — several of the devoted leaders of the administration of our holy kehilla and mosdos in Eretz Yisroel and Europe, and bestowed his holy blessings for the new year.

Before Shacharis, the brissen took place:
For the son born to R' Yechiel Alter Pollack, where the Rebbe was sandek and mohel.
For the son born to R' Shlomo Yuda Friedman, where the Rebbe was sandek.

At about 9:45 the Rebbe shlit"a entered for Shacharis. Before davening, the Rebbe put tefillin on the bar mitzvah bochurim:
The son of R' Eliezer Hersh Horowitz.
The bochur Lipa son of R' Avrohom Eckstein.

After davening, the Rebbe shlit"a went inside and looked over the new, enormous extension to the heichal along the whole Maariv side of our great beis medrash.

Afterward the Rebbe shlit"a affixed the mezuzos in his new holy residence in the Great Beis Medrash in Williamsburg, and a lechayim gathering took place, at which the gabbai R' Shlomo Wertzberger came in, and the Rebbe took lekach and benefited the gabbai as is customary.
The Rebbe also bestowed his holy blessings on the donors of the new residence: R' Avrohom Brach, R' Yechezkel Dovid Berkowitz, R' Avrohom Yuda Rosenberg, R' Moshe Eliezer Landau, R' Yekusiel Dovid Aharon Weiss, and the askanim overseeing the construction of the House of Hashem, R' Yoel Shimon HaKohen Rubin and R' Yaakov HaKohen Friedman.

In the afternoon at about 1:30 the Rebbe shlit"a entered for the pure tish of Erev Yom Hakadosh in Heichal Tehillos Yehosef in the Great Beis Medrash.
Before washing for the seudah of the mitzvah of the day, the Rebbe quietly recited a longer Leshem Yichud. At the lechayim after the fish, the Rebbe wished a well-blessed year. With the soup there were kreplach, and the meat was from the chicken with which the Rebbe had fulfilled the minhag of Kaparos as customary.
During the tish, several stirring niggunim of the Yamim Noraim were sung while the Rebbe shed rivers of tears in his holy chamber in awe and fear of the Day of Judgment, especially when the Rebbe sang the piyut "Yirtzeh Tzum Amcha" to the Ahavah Rabbah niggun received from the holy Rebbe R' Hersh of Rimanov zy"a.

The Rebbe shlit"a said Torah on the piyut "Bameh Akadem V'achaf Pnei, Lo Yikach Shochad" and explained that the days of the month of Elul until Yom Kippur contain 1,560 hours and purify like a mikvah; through emunah and the mitzvah of Krias Shema one can properly rectify them.

For Birkas Hamazon the Rebbe honored HaGaon HaTzaddik R' Naftali Hirtzka Zwebel shlit"a, Rosh Av Beis Din of Williamsburg. They finished at about 2:55.

"And Aharon lifted his hands toward the people and blessed them"
After the tish the Rebbe shlit"a went into the chamber in Heichal Meir Zelig, where thousands of chassidim passed by to receive blessings for the holy day, on a special rapid schedule because of the multitude of people.

After blessing the public, the Rebbe shlit"a went to the private mikvah in the home of R' Wolf Landau, and at about 4:10 the Rebbe shlit"a entered for Mincha in the Great Beis Medrash. The Rebbe lit the wax candles at the amud. The baal tefillah was R' Yaakov Hersh Heimann. During the Viduy Gadol the Rebbe prolonged it with weeping. They finished at about 4:45.

After the Seudas Hamafsekes in his holy residence, the Rebbe shlit"a went once more to the mikvah in the Great Beis Medrash toward the onset of the day.
At the time, the Rebbe lit in his new holy residence the candles for Shabbos and Yom Tov, a yahrzeit candle, and a candle for good health.
Then the Rebbe wished all those who were written in the Sefer Hazikaron, and all the Kollel kvitlach of the chassidim in Yerushalayim, Bnei Brak, Beit Shemesh, and Europe.

The Rebbe shlit"a recited the blessing for wrapping himself in his own tallis, and then put on the tallis, kittel and cap of the holy Rebbe, the Divrei Yoel zy"a.

Throughout all the tefillos, the heichal of the Great Beis Medrash, with all its galleries and chambers, was packed from end to end, unable to accommodate the enormous crowd of thousands who came to gather in the shadow of the Kodesh on this holy day.

"With this shall Aharon enter the Holy"
At about 6:55 the Rebbe shlit"a entered the beis medrash for Kol Nidrei. The Rebbe went up to the Aron Kodesh and prayed a silent prayer, and began the holy Kol Nidrei derasha with great arousal and with a weeping voice. The Rebbe based himself on the verse "For on this day He shall atone for you, from all your sins before Hashem." Since the ways of teshuva from the Ribono Shel Olam are not from the standpoint of intellect but from His mercy and kindness, teshuva helps without limit even if one is full of sins, and even if the external forces take hold of the mitzvos and good deeds. But "love covers all transgressions" — through the mitzvah of milah and Yom Kippur falling on Shabbos, which is a sign of love, one can cover the sins through teshuva.

After the derasha, at the onset of the day, the Rebbe shlit"a mentioned the minhag of our holy Rebbes to recite Viduy at the onset of the day, and began with tremendous, unceasing weeping "Ana Savo Lefanecha Tefilaseinu," and recited aloud at the Aron Kodesh together with the congregation, with the tune, "Ashamnu, Bagadnu..." as between every word the Rebbe burst out in a fearsome cry which carried along the entire congregation with awesome weeping and shook the hearts of the thousands of worshippers for several minutes.

After Viduy, the gabbai R' Chaim Shlomo Fisher took the Sefer Torah out of the Aron Kodesh and handed it to the Rebbe shlit"a. The Rebbe took the Sefer Torah lovingly and began words of arousal, saying that we must appease the holy Torah, and in a weeping voice continued "Anu Mlei Avon": we did not toil enough in Torah this past year, and sadly Torah lies in the corner. We ask the Torah to be a faithful advocate for Jewish children, who in the end remain attached with a strong and tight bond, and that we should accept upon ourselves more diligence, understanding, and good deeds. He concluded with many blessings.

At the conclusion, the Rebbe recited in place three times "Ohr Zarua" and "Palgei Mayim," and then walked around the beis medrash — despite the heavy crowding — and said it three more times, once on each side of the beis medrash.

The Rebbe shlit"a davened all the tefillos from a machzor with a straight prayer.
After "Kam Rabbi Shimon" the Rebbe shlit"a stood up and began "Kol Nidrei." Honored to hold the Sifrei Torah were the Nasi Shel Kehilla HaRav HaTzaddik R' Yirmi Teitelbaum shlit"a and HaGaon R' Bentzion Laub shlit"a, a moreh tzedek in our kehilla.

Afterward the Rebbe shlit"a began "Bo'u V'netzei" and Maariv.
Honored with the openings at Maariv were: HaGaon R' Chaim Aharon Ungar shlit"a, a moreh tzedek in our kehilla, R' Chaim Friedman, R' Yisroel Aush, and R' Menachem Gershon Lebovitch.
After Maariv, R' Yudel Wertzberger sang Adon Olam and recited the four chapters of Tehillim.
Shir HaYichud was recited by HaGaon HaTzaddik R' Meir Zwebel shlit"a, HaGaon R' Michel Neuman shlit"a, HaGaon Yoel Rosenfeld shlit"a, HaGaon R' Yaakov Yitzchak Winkler shlit"a, HaGaon R' Yisroel Meir Rubin shlit"a, and R' Moshe Efraim Herskowitz shlit"a. Shir Leyom HaShabbos — "Az Bayom HaShevi'i" — was sung by HaGaon R' Yeshaya Lichtenstein shlit"a.
They finished at about 11:00. The Rebbe shlit"a went up to the Aron Kodesh and wished with a radiant face "Gut Shabbos, Gut Yom Tov" to the entire holy congregation and to the people standing in the courtyard, on all sides of the beis medrash.

"And let us declare the power of this day's holiness"

On Yom Hakadosh in the morning, while wrapping in the tallis, the tallis of the holy Rebbe, the Divrei Yoel zy"a, which the Rebbe wears at Musaf, was on the table.

"Pure of heart, he stepped forward with his face toward the Holy and prayed; the recital of the Seder HaAvodah with a flame of fire; the congregation of our witnesses rely on you, and through your hand shall be our forgiveness"
Fortunate is the eye that saw the holy Avodah at Musaf, with the awesome weeping of the Satmar Rebbe shlit"a.
"Aharon, the holy one of Hashem, to serve You in holiness" especially during the holy Avodah in the Seder HaAvodah, in outpouring of the soul.

Hagbah: R' Avrohom Brach. Gelilah: R' Yoel son of R' Meir Friedman.
Opening at the Shemoneh Esrei out loud: R' Yoel son of R' Shlomo Weinberger.
They davened quickly as customary because of the late hour; they finished at 6:05.

Immediately after Mincha, the Rebbe shlit"a began Ashrei of "Tefillas Neilah" with holy fire and tremendous weeping. The Thirteen Attributes were recited at all the stiklach, following the minhag of the holy Rebbe, the Beirach Moshe zy"a. Opening of Neilah: R' Yitzchak Klein.

After Kaddish Tiskabel, at about 7:40, R' Naftali Hirtzka Stein blew the Tekiah Gedolah, and the Rebbe shlit"a cried out in a mighty and strong voice "Leshana Haba'ah B'Yerushalayim!"

The Rebbe shlit"a waited until the large minyan finished and then stood to daven Maariv. The baal tefillah was R' Yoel Weinberger.

"And he would make a Yom Tov upon his leaving the Holy in peace"

They finished at about 12:30, when the Rebbe shlit"a was escorted out with song and music.

"Fortunate is the people for whom this is so; fortunate is the people whose God is Hashem"
